The Red Wing Fire Department is a state of the art facility with workers who are dedicated to responding to emergencies in a timely and effective manner. The department has been providing the Red Wing community with emergency services for more than 150 years and it continues to do so. Fire Chief Tom Schneider has been a rescue worker for the city since 1984 when he started as a volunteer firefighter. He became head of the department in June of 2008 and has been a great leader since obtaining the position. The Red Wing Fire Department is located at 420 Plum Street and you can call it directly at (651) 388-7141 during normal business hours which are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Red Wing Public Library, located at 225 East Avenue, is a quality library with a number of resources for residents of all ages. The library offers new releases, fiction and non-fiction books, bestsellers, videos, books on tape, hundreds of periodicals and a wide range of reference materials which includes phone books, encyclopedias, Red Wing High School yearbooks and much, much more. You can also connect to the Internet through the free WiFi access. Most resources can be checked out for two weeks and there is a charge of 20 cents per day for overdue materials. The Red Wing Area Food Shelf is a way for local residents to get involved with helping people who are less fortunate. You can bring your fresh fruits and vegetables to the First Lutheran Church at 615 West 5th Street for donations. The Food Shelf is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For more information, call Craig at (651) 388-5985 or Mary at (651) 388-2698.

There are many opportunities for you to volunteer to make the Red Wing community a better place. Council Member Carol Duff is leading the effort to institute volunteers in a number of roles throughout the city. Some of the volunteer opportunities include trimming weeds at Oakwood Cemetery, pulling flowers from city gardens after they freeze, blowing leaves at area cemeteries, painting signs, picnic tables and benches and much more. With more than 1,000 acres of natural parks, nearly 1,000 fire hydrants in the city and 351,000 miles of sidewalks, there is always something for you to do in your area.
